Herbed Cream Cheese Spread

This little beauty makes for a quick and easy appetizer.  It takes just minutes to throw together and looks very impressive.

2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
zest of 1 lemon
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1 (8oz.) package cream cheese
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese
2 slices shaved brown sugar ham

Mix the basil, lemon zest and pepper on a shallow plate until well blended.  Place the cream cheese block in the basil mixture, turning evenly to coat all sides of the cream cheese; making sure to press the basil mixture securely into the cream cheese.  Cut the coated block of cream cheese horizontally in half.  Place one half on a serving dish, basil side down.  Sprinkle the parmesan cheese onto the cut-side of the cream cheese.  Top with ham and second half of cream cheese.  Serve at room temperature or microwave for 30-45 seconds, or until warm.  Serve as a spread with your favorite crackers.
